Research + Development: Early Project Support 2022

Announcements, R+D Support, Resources

Los Angeles Performance Practice is excited to announce the next round of Research + Development (R+D): Early Project Support, designed to support the creation of new work by Los Angeles-based performance makers in the early stages of a project’s process. Through R+D, we aim to provide seed support to artists who are committed to live performance, and are looking to develop their work locally. Our mission continues to be anchored by a devotion to the production and presentation of contemporary performance by artists whose work advances and challenges multi-disciplinary artistic practices.

The program will support an early development process for two invited projects. Each invited project will receive a $1,600 stipend, plus additional support that will be tailored to best meet individual needs.

Some examples of this additional support include:

  • Funding for concentrated research such as knowledge building materials, literature, domestic travel, video conferencing services, remote learning
  • Additional support for collaborators
  • A local residency in a work/rehearsal space for project development
  • Project documentation
  • Project planning and fundraising consultations

Invited artists will meet periodically with LAPP producers throughout their activities. Activities and support will be co-designed with the LAPP team, and will take place over a period of approximately two weeks. At the culmination of the program, artists will engage in a formal report back to LAPP staff and fellow artists, sharing research, progress, and potential plans for presenting/developing the work. All activity must be in accordance with state and local health guidelines.

Two additional opportunities will open and be announced specifically for artists who are parents/guardians in February 2022-stay tuned! Artists who are parents/guardians can apply to either opportunity.

Information Session

Join us for an optional information session on February 2, 2022 at 6pm to review the Research + Development program, timeline, and process for submitting an interest form.

Review Process

Interest forms will be reviewed by LAPP staff, along with two Los Angeles artists. The group will invite two projects to receive support.

In compliance with our Board-adopted Cultural Equity & Inclusion policy, we will prioritize work made by female-identifying, non-binary, and BIPOC artists, however, we welcome interest forms from independent artists of all backgrounds.

Projects will be invited based on the following criteria:

  • The project’s alignment with LAPP’s mission: to support a unique and diverse constellation of artists and audiences through the active creation and presentation of groundbreaking experiences that use innovative approaches to collaboration, technology and social engagement.
  • The project’s potential to contribute to an active dialogue within a network of contemporary practitioners in Los Angeles —curators and producers, artists and designers, audiences and patrons—all leveraged in service to the ideas and issues of our time.
  • Alignment between the project’s needs and LAPP’s current resources (which include a $1,600 stipend, a limited pool of funds toward documentation, or other modest requests, and the feasibility of matching the artist with an appropriate space partner if desired).
  • The project’s potential for ongoing development throughout 2022.

CASUAL RETURNS!

Sep 28, 2022

Tickets available now! CASUAL returns on October 18 + 22! CASUAL provides Los Angeles artists with an opportunity to show a work in process. CASUAL supports artists who are looking to engage in a critical exchange with audiences by presenting their work in the early to mid stages of development. The new work can be loose. Anything between the spark of an idea or an excerpt from a new performance that is ready to be tested in front of an audience. CASUAL aims to create a space for experimentation with a friendly audience that feels useful to the artist’s practice and process.
