R+D IS HERE FOR 2024!
Los Angeles Performance Practice is excited to announce the next round of RESEARCH + DEVELOPMENT (R+D). We have two offerings under this program: R+D and R+D: For Parents/Guardians. Both support the creation of new work by Los Angeles-based performance makers in the early stages of a project’s process. Through R+D, we aim to provide seed support to artists who are committed to live performance and looking to develop their work locally. Our mission continues to be anchored by a devotion to the production and presentation of contemporary performance by artists whose work advances and challenges multi-disciplinary artistic practices.
2024 Offerings
R+D
This program will support the early development process for two invited projects. Each invited project will receive a $2,400 stipend, plus additional support tailored to best meet individual needs. This support may encompass several possibilities, including but not limited to:
- Funding for concentrated research such as knowledge-building materials, literature, local travel (airfare is not eligible), video conferencing services, remote learning
- Additional support for collaborators
- A local residency in a work/rehearsal space for project development
- Project documentation
- Project planning and fundraising consultations
Invited artists will meet periodically with the LAPP team throughout their activities. The activities and support will be co-designed with the LAPP team, and will take place over a period of approximately two weeks (the days do not need to be consecutive if that does not serve the project or artist). At the culmination of the program, artists will engage in a formal report back to LAPP staff and fellow artists, sharing research, progress, and potential plans for presenting/developing the work. All activity must be in accordance with state and local health guidelines.
R+D: For Parents/Guardians
Los Angeles Performance Practice is thrilled to once again offer an R+D opportunity specifically for parents/guardians. This offering is designed for parent/guardian artists with dependents under 18 years of age.
This program will support an early development process for two invited projects. Each invited artist will receive a $1,200 stipend, an $800 contribution towards childcare expenses, plus additional support tailored to best meet individual needs.
Invited artists will meet periodically with LAPP producers throughout their activities. Activities will be co-designed with the LAPP team, and will take place over a period of approximately one week (the days do not need to be consecutive if that does not serve the project or artist). At the culmination of the program, artists will engage in a formal report back to LAPP staff and fellow artists, sharing research, progress, and potential plans for presenting/developing the work. All activity must be in accordance with state and local health guidelines.
Review Process
Interest forms will be reviewed by LAPP staff and two Los Angeles artists. The group will invite five projects to receive support. New for this year, LAPP is curating one of the projects to receive support in preparation for the 2025 Live Arts Exchange [LAX] Festival, in addition to participating in the program alongside the other four invited projects.
Projects will be invited based on the following criteria:
- The project’s alignment with LAPP’s mission: to support a unique and diverse constellation of artists and audiences through the active creation and presentation of groundbreaking experiences that use innovative approaches to collaboration, technology and social engagement.
- The project’s potential to contribute to an active dialogue within a network of contemporary practitioners in Los Angeles —curators and producers, artists and designers, audiences and patrons—all leveraged in service to the ideas and issues of our time.
- Alignment between the project’s needs and LAPP’s current resources (which include the designated artist stipend, a limited pool of funds toward documentation, or other modest requests, and the feasibility of matching the artist with an appropriate space partner if desired).
- The project’s potential for ongoing development throughout 2024-2025 and beyond.
In compliance with our Board-adopted Cultural Equity & Inclusion policy, while we welcome and encourage interest forms from independent artists of all backgrounds, we will prioritize work made by women-identifying, non-binary, and BIPOC artists.
Artists must primarily reside in Los Angeles County.
Information Session
Join us for an optional interactive information session on Monday, April 29, 2024 from 5:00-6:30pm to review the RESEARCH + DEVELOPMENT program, timeline, and process for submitting an interest form.
For questions, please contact William Ruiz Morales, Programs Associate: William@PerformancePractice.org
Interest Form
The online form will not save your progress and must be completed in one sitting. We highly recommend that you complete the questions on a separate document that you can save and then copy and paste your responses into the form.
Interest Forms Due: Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 6:00pm PST
Only one interest form is needed for both R+D and R+D: For Parents/Guardians. You can mark on the form if you are interested in being considered for both offerings or only one. Invited artists can only participate in one of the two modalities.
Artists may only submit with one project.
Catalyst Gatherings
All R+D participants will have the option to participate in a Catalyst Group with the other artists if they are so inclined. Functioning as a mini-cohort, the artists will be able to support one another, exchange ideas and resources, and be in active conversation with LAPP as well as other artists participating in LAPP’s additional programs. The artists have the freedom to make as much (or as little) use of the Catalyst Group as they like. There will be one kick-off event in August and a culminating event in late October.
