Liz Toonkel (born Chappaqua, NY) is a Los Angeles based artist and magician. Her interdisciplinary practice deals with ideas of absence and presence as they relate to the representation and existence of the female/feminine.
She has performed and displayed her artwork at Honor Fraser Gallery, LAX Festival, Perform Chinatown and the 2016 Queer Biennial in Los Angeles. Her films have played at various film festivals including Indie Memphis and the Portland Women’s Film Festival. She has been a resident at Automata, PAM, The Marble House Project and the Transart Institute in Berlin. Liz earned her BFA at New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts in Film & Television Production with a minor in Gender & Sexuality and holds a dual MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Art & Technology and Scenic Design.
Liz is also a Production Designer and Stylist for film, television & live performance and production designed the upcoming feature film of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. She is a magician member of the Academy of Magical Arts.
