We’re taking a moment to rebuild.
Los Angeles Performance Practice recently celebrated our tenth anniversary of serving artists and producing new work in Los Angeles. The organization has grown organically over the past ten years, but at a pace so rapid that we haven’t had time to truly digest what it means to “institutionalize.” What began as a structure to allow for our founder, Miranda Wright, to produce new work with her (insanely talented and innovative) peers, has evolved into an organization that aspires to have a greater impact on the national arts ecology – and this deserves time to reimagine and restructure into a more stable system that artists can truly depend upon.
Like you, we do not know what forms live performance will take as we slowly venture back out into a post-pandemic world. We believe in the power of gathering, and will hope to gather again in small groups once it is safe.
In October 2019, we created internal Cultural Equity & Inclusion Policies, which have been adopted by our Board, and are currently under revision. Our CEI Policy will shape our actions moving forward, including establishing a $20 minimum hourly wage for artists working in rehearsal and performance, seeking resources to provide childcare for working artists, and centering the work of generative BIPOC and female-identifying artists.
As we rebuild and restructure, we commit to doing so in a way that contributes to dismantling white supremacy. We are using this time to gather resources, and further our understanding of how arts funding functions in Los Angeles and nationally. We look forward to working with artists, funders, individual donors, and audiences as we evaluate and rebuild our internal accountability systems, staff structures, programs, touring projects, festival platform, and expand our Board of Directors.
