On Tuesday, August 19, LAPP hosted our summer edition of FREE ADVICE. Offered since 2015, FREE ADVICE is a no-cost program open to any artists working in Los Angeles. In one-on-one sessions with arts leaders from the L.A. community and LAPP staff, artists are invited to ask questions pertaining to their work, from applying to grants and other resources, to identifying potential collaborators and performance venues.
The August 19th session was a valuable one for both participants and mentors alike, illustrating why FREE ADVICE slots fill up instantly each time the program is offered. LAPP’s staff advisors consisted of Marsian De Lellis, Scarlett Kim, William Ruiz Morales, and Zoe Aja Moore, who each learned as much as they shared.
Marsian piloted a new methodology of writing your “artist obituary” in order to identify your desired legacy and streamline your current goals. They found it fascinating where the artists took the exercise, and the participating artists spoke to not only how it helped them refocus their practice, but also to generate ideas for new work. Zoe was particularly struck by the need artists have to connect with producers. “The artists I met with all had projects that had been through an initial stage,” she shared, “and they’re looking for that second phase of development. The need for a producer is clear.”
Participants called the experience “EXCELLENT” and “a kick start.” LAPP is honored to help facilitate such breakthroughs and looks forward to deepening our relationships with the L.A. artist community.
Keep an eye out for future opportunities to sign up for FREE ADVICE.
