Development and Research [D+R] Residency Program
for Performance Projects

September 2018 – March 2019

DEADLINE:
MONDAY, JULY 23, 2018 at 11:29pm PST

offered in collaboration with
AUTOMATA

ABOUT THE D+R RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Los Angeles Performance Practice and Automata offer development residencies for Southern California artists creating new works in contemporary live performance. We encourage applicants whose projects align with our missions—works that explore the intersections of object performance, media, visual art, sound art, experimental writing and live performance, and/or employ innovative approaches to collaboration, technology and social engagement. The program is designed to provide vital infrastructure for Los Angeles based artists, and places emphasis on work that reflects/connects to the unique histories, environments, communities, issues and artistic legacies that define it.

Selected projects receive 24-hour access to dedicated space for a one- or two-week period at Automata in Los Angeles’ Chinatown District, as well as additional financial support in the form of a modest stipend. Automata is an alternative performance space/gallery, suitable for small to mid-scale projects, that either need minimal technical infrastructure or construct their own systems of design and installation.

Each residency will be crafted in collaboration with the proposed project’s artistic team, who are asked to identify specific areas of research, development and/or collaboration, along with a minimum of one point of public engagement, which may take the form of conversations, workshops, showings or other activities open to the public. In addition to supporting the quality of works being developed, we also seek to extend the dialogue about contemporary performance, as well as connecting institutions, audiences and students to the creative life of artists.

These residencies are collaboratively offered by Los Angeles Performance Practice and Automata, and supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Research + Development: Early Project Support 2022

Jan 11, 2022

INTEREST FORMS NOW CLOSED Los Angeles Performance Practice is excited to announce the next round of Research + Development (R+D), designed to support the creation of new work by Los Angeles-based performance makers in the early stages of a project’s process. Through R+D, we aim to provide seed support to artists who are committed to live performance, and who are looking to develop their work locally. Our mission continues to be anchored by a devotion to the production and presentation of contemporary performance by artists whose work advances and challenges multi-disciplinary artistic practices. The program will support an early development process for two invited projects. Each invited project will receive a $1,600 stipend, plus additional support that will be tailored to best meet individual needs.

2021 Research + Development Residency // Marsian De Lellis

Jul 9, 2021

For their 2021 R+D Residency at home, Marsian De Lellis spent time developing and researching the script for Model Killer: Giant Crimes + Tiny Cover-Ups. Model Killer is a solo immersive puppetry and performing object installation centered on a disgruntled dollhouse maker turned investigator, Vivian Nutt, who builds dioramas of unsolved murders, only for it to be revealed that she is in fact, a serial killer.
