FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles Performance Practice presents the 9th edition of the Live Arts Exchange [LAX] Festival, a weeklong showcase of contemporary performance in Downtown Los Angeles October 17 – 23, 2022

“LAX corrals the city’s most creative and visionary artists . . . to shape a uniquely West Coast scene.”

—Los Angeles Magazine

The Live Arts Exchange (LAX) Festival, Vol. 9, will take place October 17-23, 2022 at DTLA venues FRANKIE and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). The Los Angeles Performance Practice (LAPP) curatorial team of Miranda Wright and Patricia Garza, working alongside Alex Sloane, Associate Curator, The Museum of Contemporary Art, have created an electric week-long lineup of all L.A.-based artists creating new work in contemporary dance, theater, music, and cross-genre performance.

Since its launch in 2013, LAX Festival has served as a highly visible platform that showcases some of the most innovative artists and independent companies in Los Angeles while reaching thousands of audience members. Each installment of the LAX Festival is a platform for exchange, engaging artists, curators and organizations in performance presentations, dialogues and artist-to-artist interactions designed to cultivate mutual inquiry and long-term network development.

“Los Angeles Performance Practice is proud to present the ninth edition of our Live Arts Exchange Festival and bring together this extremely talented cadre of local artists,” says LAPP Executive Director Miranda Wright. “As always, we are excited to see how this unique iteration of the festival activates audiences, and what reactions, conversations, and connections are born from the collective experience.”

The LAX Festival opens with longtime collaborators Paul Outlaw & Joe Seely at MOCA’s Ahmanson Auditorium on Monday, October 17th at 7:30 PM, presented as part of Wonmi’s Warehouse Programs.

On Tuesday, October 18th at 8PM, artists Magnolia Yang Sao Yia and Lydia Li will present in process works at FRANKIE as part of LAPP’s CASUAL program. Originally piloted in 2019, CASUAL provides Los Angeles artists with an opportunity to engage in critical exchange with audiences by presenting their work in the early to mid stages of development.

Choreographer Chelsea Zeffiro will perform with collaborator Ian Isles on October 19th at FRANKIE at 8PM.

Artists Jasmine Orpilla, Jobel Medina, and Mark Golamco will perform at MOCA’s Ahmanson Auditorium on Thursday October 20th at 7:30 PM, presented as part of Wonmi’s Warehouse Programs. This split bill features new dance, experimental opera, and original music.

On Friday, October 21th at 8PM, artist Mireya Lucio will perform a live screenplay onstage at FRANKIE.

Two performances will take place at FRANKIE on Saturday, October 22. At 1PM, Ajani Brannum, Vanessa Hernández Cruz, and Jennifer Jonassen will present works in progress as part of CASUAL. At 8PM, musical artist Tova Katz will perform SEE YOU AT THE FUNERAL, directed by Diana Wyenn.

The festival will conclude Sunday October 23rd with a new music performance by Cassia Streb at 8PM at FRANKIE.

All ticketed performances will be staged at FRANKIE on 300 S Mission Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90033. All free performances will take place at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) on 250 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Programming begins October 17 through Sunday, October 23. Performance times vary; see website for more information. Festival passes for the full week are available for $75. Single ticket prices range from $10 to $20. All tickets are general admission.

Tickets may be purchased online at https://performancepractice.vbotickets.com/events. At time of purchase please mention any wheelchair/accessible seating needs. Dates, details, and ticket prices are subject to change.

Face masks are strongly recommended while attending the festival when not actively eating or drinking. All guests will be asked to provide proof of primary vaccination series completion with a photo ID at check-in. Booster shots are not required but highly recommended. Medical exemptions will be accepted with a doctor’s note at check-in.

Los Angeles Performance Practice is a non-profit organization devoted to the production and presentation of contemporary performance by artists whose work advances and challenges multidisciplinary artistic practices. LAPP’s mission is to support a unique and diverse constellation of artists and audiences through the active creation and presentation of groundbreaking experiences that use innovative approaches to collaboration, technology and social engagement.

Los Angeles Performance Practice is thrilled to further expand on our Research + Development (R+D) program offerings by announcing a new residency opportunity for parents/guardians. The program will support an early development process for two invited projects. Each invited residency will receive a $1,200 stipend, a $800 contribution towards childcare expenses, and one week or approximately 40 hours in a work/rehearsal space. We are open to artists constructing their time in a way that serves their creativity and their parenting lives, and will work with each invited artist to find an appropriate work space based on the project’s needs and the program’s available resources.
